Sanctions against players involved in the betting scandal range from 45 days to 12 months.
Turkey.- The Turkish Football Federation (TTF) Arbitration Board has unanimously rejected the appeals of 86 footballers sanctioned for betting-related violations. The board confirmed the penalties issued by the Professional Football Discipline Board (PFDK), which range from suspensions of 45 days to 12 months.
The cases, under Article 57 of the Football Discipline Regulation, involve players who either held betting accounts or placed wagers on domestic or international matches. The TFF said evidence assessments, legal classifications and sanction criteria were reviewed in detail and found consistent with federation regulations. players may still pursue appeals through FIFA or UEFA.
The sanctions followed a probe sparked by unusual betting patterns detected in a February 2024 Second League match between Ankaraspor and Nazillispor. That led to a five-month audit into betting activity among players, referees, and club staff. Some 149 referees and assistants have since been suspended and more than 1,000 players reporte to the PFDK, including Süper Lig players from Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Konyaspor.
Prosecutors this week reportedly made at least 35 new arrests, including footballers, coaches, executives and media figures. Authorities say they seized encrypted communications, bank documents and electronic devices as part of ongoing inquiries into potential information-sharing and coordinated wagering.
The scandal has caused operational challenges within Turkish football, including fixture adjustments in lower divisions and changes to national team call-ups.
The TFF says it has expanded its compliance toolkit with new ethics training modules for referees and strengthened financial monitoring mechanisms. Federation President İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu has stated that the goal is to consolidate a long-term integrity framework by mid-2026. The TFF’s upcoming integrity report is set to outline additional proposals and may include recommendations for new disciplinary standards and structural adjustments.
