Dr. Rebecca Miller, UNODC Regional Coordinator for Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, praised the Royal Government’s “proactive measures”.
Cambodia.- The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has reaffirmed its support for Cambodia’s crackdown on cyber-enabled fraud and related criminal networks. In a meeting in Phnom Penh this week, Dr. Rebecca Miller, UNODC Regional Coordinator for Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, praised the Royal Government’s “proactive measures” to dismantle cyber-scam hubs and pledged deeper cooperation to enhance enforcement and victim protection.
Miller said no single country can effectively tackle the complex web of digital fraud, human trafficking and criminal syndicates on its own, calling for a “robust framework for international cooperation” to bring network leaders to justice and protect potential victims.
The meeting concluded with a roadmap for enhanced collaboration that includes specialised training for Cambodian law enforcement, expanded public outreach to prevent victims from falling prey to scams, and strengthened transnational investigations.
Cambodia’s campaign against online scams has intensified in recent months with operations against hundreds of alleged cyber-scam facilities, including the arrest of thousands of suspected foreign operatives. Cambodia has cooperated with foreign partners on enforcement actions, including the repatriation of dozens of alleged scammers to countries such as South Korea.
As reported by the Agence Kampuchea Presse, Senior Minister Chhay Sinarith, head of the Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS), said: “The Royal Government of Cambodia remains deeply committed to these issues,” Sinarith told UNODC representatives, highlighting that effective disruption of scam networks requires not only domestic enforcement but also enhanced international intelligence sharing and coordinated investigations.
