India.- Police in Goa have arrested seven people and seized equipment worth over Rs 3 lakh (US$3,187) in two coordinated raids on suspected online gambling operations in Colva. The first operation was carried out late on Friday, April 24, by officers from Colva Police Station after receiving intelligence that illegal betting was being conducted from flats in the Vaswaddo–Benaulim area and a residential complex in Vanelim. Officers apprehended three suspects identified as Sanny Telang, Rahul Patel and Tejaskumar Dabagar.
A second raid took place on Saturday night at Florida Garden in Vanelim, where four more suspects were arrested: Jiger Thakar, Dhaval Patel and Jay Patel from Gujarat, and Vishal Chawla from Haryana.
In both raids, officers seized laptops, mobile phones and other devices. Items recovered were estimated to be worth Rs 3 lakh. In a press briefing today, Police Inspector Vikram Naik, said the suspects were “caught red-handed while accepting online illegal bets” and operating from a “common gaming house within closed premises using computer-based platforms.”
He said investigations were ongoing to determine the extent of the network. Meanwhile, those detained face charges under Sections 3 and 4 of the Goa, Daman and Diu Prevention of Gambling Act, which prohibit the operation of common gaming houses and participation in illegal gambling.
