30 detained in raid on alleged illegal e-sabong hub in Talisay City

Police said the location had been converted into a makeshift live streaming hub for online cockfighting.

The Philippines.- Police in Negros Occidental have made 30 arrests in a raid on an alleged illegal online cockfighting operation in Talisay City. The operation was led by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) on Thursday, April 23, following intelligence reports that the site was being used to facilitate remote betting through live-streamed cockfights.

Police said e-sabong matches were broadcast to remote bettors using a network of cameras, computers and satellite equipment. According to investigators, the operators attempted to conceal the location of their activities by using foreign-language overlays during broadcasts, creating the impression that the betting streams originated from outside the Philippines. The operation is believed to have generated millions of pesos in daily revenue.

Seized items included electronic devices, routers, laptops, multiple mobile phones, video equipment, cockfighting gaffs and around 280 fighting cocks. In a press briefing today, CIDG spokesperson Police Major Helen dela Cruz said two people are being assessed as possible victims of human trafficking. She added that several suspects remain at large.

Interior secretary Juanito Victor Remulla suggested that the group may have ties to a foreign-backed syndicate involved in other activities, including illegal cigarette manufacturing. He also noted a possible connection with a rise in cases of stolen fighting cocks across Negros Island.

Suspects may face charges under anti-illegal gambling laws and the Cybercrime Prevention Act. The development comes after police made 174 arrests in a raid on an e-sabong operation in Vitas, Tondo.
