Crown and Star face probe over alleged underage gambling breach

Authorities claim the teenager gambled more than AU$21,000 on visits to Crown Sydney and The Star Sydney.

Australia.- The Independent Casino Commission is investigating Crown Sydney and The Star Sydney over alleged underage gambling violations. A 16-year-old boy was reportedly able to gamble and drink at both venues on multiple occasions using a fake driver’s licence between April and August 2025.

During the four-month period, authorities claim the teenager gambled more than AU$21,000 (US$15,035) and was allegedly served 91 alcoholic beverages at the casinos. The teen reportedly made some of the visits accompanied by his mother.

The regulator will examine how the teenager repeatedly bypassed safeguards. Under Australian gambling laws, casinos are required to prevent underage individuals from accessing gambling areas and are expected to enforce responsible service of alcohol requirements. Failure to comply can result in regulatory sanctions and financial penalties.

The teenager has received a five-year casino ban. Any enforcement action against the casinos is likely to depend on whether staff are found to have adequately checked identification.
