India.- The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has notified stakeholders that the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 will come into effect on May 1. The regulations bans real money gaming while making a clear distinction from permitted social games and esports.
Any game involving real money stakes is explicitly banned. Authorities say law enforcement will coordinate with banks to block related transactions.
A new Online Gaming Authority of India will act as the central regulator, overseeing classification, compliance and user complaints, while also maintaining a list of banned games. The authority will have the power to investigate violations and impose penalties.
Most non-money games will face minimal regulatory requirements, with no mandatory registration unless specific conditions are met. The framework introduces user protection measures, including transparency requirements and grievance mechanisms.
