HKJC and Guangzhou to promote horse-themed culture and tourism in Greater Bay Area

The initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between Hong Kong and mainland China.

Hong Kong.- The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Guangzhou Municipal Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau to jointly promote racing tourism in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The initiative will promote the concept of “Two Cities, Three Racecourses.”

The campaign links Happy Valley Racecourse and Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong with Conghua Racecourse, aiming to position Guangzhou as a world-class tourism city while reinforcing Hong Kong’s role as Asia’s events capital. The agreement was signed at Hong Kong Science and Technology Park on March 17.

The organisations will collaborate in four key areas: policy support, promotion and publicity, tourism product development and industry talent cultivation. The Guangzhou tourism bureau will support the inclusion of racing tourism in cross-border cultural and tourism initiatives and help position Conghua Racecourse as an integrated destination for horse-related culture, sports and tourism.

The initiative will also aim to strengthen online and offline promotion, explore video production highlighting world-class racing events at the Guangzhou venue, and organise large-scale promotional campaigns centred on horse culture and equine sports. In addition, leading tourism companies will be encouraged to develop “one-trip, multi-stop” travel packages linking the Club’s racecourses in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, targeting both domestic and international business travellers.

Industry development will also be supported through collaboration with media organisations and institutions in Guangzhou, with a focus on talent development related to equine sports events and the promotion of horse culture. A key aspect will be the launch of international-standard racing and a series of cultural, sports and tourism events at Conghua Racecourse in Guangzhou in October.

The collaboration builds on a framework agreement signed in 2021 between the HKJC and the Guangzhou Municipal Government aimed at strengthening equine industry cooperation between the two cities. Conghua Racecourse is an example of cross-border cooperation between Guangdong and Hong Kong. Developed with support from mainland authorities and the Hong Kong SAR government, the facility uses cross-border horse transportation and quarantine arrangements, as well as authorisation for Hong Kong and overseas veterinarians to practise at the venue.
