Hong Kong.- The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has put forward a proposal to the SAR government, advocating for an expansion of its betting operations. It aims to improve its competitiveness by introducing new gambling options and divert demand from illicit off-course betting.

It said illegal bookmakers were taking over HK$15bn annually, offering a range of betting options beyond traditional football betting, including basketball and tennis.

The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong has voiced support for the initiative, advocating for the inclusion of basketball betting. It argued that diversifying the HKJC’s betting portfolio would facilitate regulation and contribute to increased betting tax revenue for the government. 

The Home and Youth Affairs Bureau said that if there is sustained public demand and sufficient societal support, authorities will consider expanding legal gambling options.
