Hong Kong.- The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has approved a donation of more than HK$426m (US$54.8m) through its Charities Trust to support The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in establishing and operating the HKU Jockey Club Enterprise Sustainability Global Research Institute. The initiative also includes the creation of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Endowed Professorships aimed at strengthening sustainability research and policy development in Hong Kong and across Asia.
The ceremony for the endowed professorships was held on May 5 and attended by representatives from both the Club and HKU, including Club Steward Rimsky Yuen and HKU president and vice-chancellor Professor Xiang Zhang. The event recognised the appointment of four internationally distinguished scholars specialising in economics, finance, entrepreneurship and accounting.
According to the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the new institute aims to become a global hub for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and sustainability best practices. The project will focus on three main pillars: research, engagement and education.
Under the research component, the four endowed professorships will aim to promote multidisciplinary collaboration and transform academic findings into actionable solutions. The engagement pillar will include the development of sustainability indexes, consultancy services and international conferences aimed at fostering cross-sector partnerships. Meanwhile, the education component will support sustainability-focused courses and interdisciplinary programmes designed to prepare future professionals in the sector.
