Sands China CEO says integrated tourism model remains key to Macau diversification push

Grant Chum highlighted political stability, integrated resort scale and non-gaming investment as key drivers of Macau’s long-term competitiveness during G2E Asia 2026.


Macau.- Grant Chum, chief executive officer and executive director of Sands China, delivered the keynote address at Tuesday’s opening ceremony of G2E Asia 2026. Speaking to 200 industry leaders and tourism stakeholders from across the region at The Venetian Macao, he stressed the role integrated resorts to play in reshaping the city into a broader tourism and business destination.

Themed “Evolving Together: Advancing Macao’s Diversification Through Integration, Innovation, and Inclusion,” the keynote speech outlined how Sands China’s own development model, which Chum traced back to the vision of late Sheldon Adelson. Chum said the company continues to view Macau as a strategic long-term investment market, supported by political stability under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework and strong demand from the Greater Bay Area.

He highlighted its ongoing investments in hospitality, retail, entertainment and MICE infrastructure, and Chum stressed the growing importance of the “Event Economy” as a key driver of the next phase of Macao’s diversification, with purposeful programming playing an increasingly strategic role in attracting international visitors. He said this move is designed to extend visitor stays, attract business tourism and reduce Macau’s historical reliance on gaming revenue.

Sands China said it has invested US$17bn in Macau to date and plans to commit an additional US$4.5bn through 2032 under its current gaming concession obligations “Sands China reaffirms its unwavering confidence in Macau’s future and pledges to continue investing in high-quality non-gaming projects, working closely with the government, industry and Macau community to further facilitate the city’s development as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure,” Chum said.
