Turkey.- President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan delivered his strongest public remarks to date on online betting, describing its social impact in terms comparable to terrorism. The comments were made during a public event marking the launch of youth-focused television channel TRT Genc and signal a further tightening of enforcement ahead of the country’s next general election.
Erdoğan said gambling addiction poses a threat to family structures and social cohesion. “Almost every phone has become a casino,” he said, grouping gambling with other forms of addiction such as drugs, alcohol and tobacco. His remarks reflect the government’s broader narrative around social protection rather than a shift in gambling policy itself.
Turkey has banned all forms of gambling since 1996, except for the state-run Milli Piyango, which manages lotteries and regulates sports betting. While the ban effectively eliminated physical casinos, unlicensed online gambling has continued to operate, largely through offshore platforms.
Under Erdoğan’s leadership, enforcement has increasingly focused on digital channels. Authorities rely on cybercrime units to block websites and dismantle illegal betting networks, and the latest phase of the crackdown extends to payment providers and digital wallet services seen as facilitating unlicensed activity.
