Australia.- Rugby league clubs in Australia will be allowed to maintain betting sponsorships on team jerseys under existing agreements until the end of the 2028 season. The transitional arrangement tied to the federal government’s upcoming gambling advertising restrictions allows National Rugby League (NRL) clubs to honour current deals for a limited period after the new regulations come into force on January 1, 2027.
Several teams have agreements with bookmakers running through 2028. The phased approach aims to address pressure from the sports industry. There had been warnings that an immediate ban would trigger financial losses estimated at up to AU$4bn (US$2.85bn). NRL chairman Peter V’landys has argued that wagering partnerships play a vital role in supporting club operations and grassroots programmes.
