Former AFL stars under fire for promoting illegal online casinos

Australia.- Former Brisbane Lions players Mitch Robinson and Rhys Mathieson are facing allegations that they promoted illegal online casinos to their social media followings. The duo, who co-host the AFL podcast Rip Through It, reportedly endorsed Vegastars, an offshore gambling operator that offers real-money games like roulette and poker machines.

The allegations involve the players using their platforms to run an AU$5,000 (US$3,585) sponsored giveaway. While such platforms may operate legally in other jurisdictions, Australian law prohibits online casinos from targeting domestic residents.

Tim Costello of the Alliance for Gambling Reform condemned the promotion as “utterly irresponsible,” noting that former professional athletes hold a position of influence over young fans. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has confirmed it is aware of the allegations.

While the regulator has blocked the main Vegastars website, it noted that unlicensed operators often use mirror sites to bypass restrictions. The ACMA warned that influencers who facilitate access to these illegal services, such as by providing direct links, could face civil penalties of up to AU$2.5m (US$1.79m).

Robinson alone boasts over 58,000 subscribers on his personal YouTube channel. Neither player has responded to requests for comment on the allegations.
