Indonesia.- The National Police have detained 321 foreign nationals following a raid targeting what officers described as a coordinated online gambling operation from an office complex near Jakarta’s Chinatown. Police said the group were linked to dozens of gambling websites serving customers outside Indonesia.
According to police, the detainees are predominantly foreign nationals, including 228 from Vietnam and 57 from China. Others are from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia.
Brigadier General Wira Satya Triputra, director of general crimes at Indonesia’s National Criminal Investigation Agency, said the group had reportedly been operating in the country for about two months. Police said those arrested were allegedly assigned duties including customer support, telemarketing, account management and financial administration. Officers confiscated electronic equipment, servers and digital systems.
Police said 275 people had so far been formally identified as suspects under Indonesia’s anti-gambling laws, which carry penalties of up to nine years in prison and fines of up to 2bn rupiah (US$114,787). The remaining detainees are being questioned as investigations continue, including beyond gambling offences, with investigators examining potential immigration violations, money laundering and wider transnational cybercrime.
