Macau reports sharp increase in tourist non-gaming spending in Q1

Macau.- The tourism sector in Macau generated MOP24.43bn (US$3.03bn) in non-gaming visitor spending during the first quarter of 2026, according to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) quarterly Visitor Expenditure Survey. That’s a 24.5 per cent increase compared with the same period last year,

The figures showed that overnight visitors spent MOP17.25bn (US$2.14bn), up 12.2 per cent year-on-year, while spending by same-day visitors climbed by 69.2 per cent to MOP7.18bn (US$890.7m).

Average non-gaming expenditure per visitor reached MOP2,179 (US$270) in the January-to-March period, increasing by 9.5 per cent from a year earlier. Overnight travellers spent an average of MOP4,101 (US$508) each, up 7.7 per cent, while same-day visitors spent an average of MOP1,025 (US$127), up 40.6 per cent.

Shopping remained the largest spending category, accounting for 48.2 per cent of all visitor expenditure. Accommodation represented 21.1 per cent and food and beverage purchases 21 per cent.

Among Macau’s major visitor markets, mainland Chinese tourists were responsible for the highest average spend of MOP2,392 (US$297) per person, up 4.1 per cent year-on-year. Travellers from Taiwan spent an average of MOP2,004 (US$249), up 8.9 per cent, and visitors from Hong Kong MOP1,203 (US$149), up 37.4 per cent.

Per-capita expenditure among overseas tourists rose 32.5 per cent year-on-year to MOP2,178 (US$270). Visitors from South Korea spent an average of MOP2,226 (US$276), up 35 per cent from Q1 2025, while Japanese travellers spent MOP2,093 (US$260), up 47.9 per cent

Singaporean visitors’ average spend was MOP3,697 (US$459), up 43.1 per cent year-on-year. Visitors from Thailand spent MOP2,224 (US$276) on average, an increase of 4.2 per cent, while Malaysian travellers spent MOP1,761 (US$219), up 5.6 per cent.
