Macau lawmakers raise concerns over robot croupiers

Legislators fear the potential impact of robot dealers on gaming industry jobs.

Macau.- Lawmakers in Macau have renewed concerns over the use of automation in casinos after a second-generation humanoid robot dealer was showcased at G2E Asia by Chow Tai Fook. During a Legislative Assembly session, legislator Leong Sun Iok warned that the technology could threaten local employment in the gaming sector.

According to Leong, comments made during the expo about falling production costs and the possible future adoption of robotic dealers by casino operators immediately raised concerns among gaming workers. “Many croupiers fear being replaced by these robots in the future, which would directly affect their jobs,” the lawmaker said.

Macau currently has around 24,000 casino croupiers, and the positions are among the professions protected for Macau residents, making them an important generator of local employment. Leong argued that replacing human dealers with robots could directly affect thousands of local families and have a broader impact on the local economy.

“In my opinion, the core value of technological development should be to serve humanity and support humanity, not replace humanity,” the legislator said during the session.

The issue of automated dealers is not new in Macau. Lawmakers noted that previous discussions in recent years have seen opposition from employee groups and labour unions. Leong urged authorities to maintain safeguards for local workers.

Beyond robotic croupiers, lawmakers have raised concerns about wider automation trends across casino operations, including electronic table games and digital gaming systems. Some workers reportedly believe these technologies are increasing operational pressure while reducing staffing levels.
