Arrests were made in an early morning raid.
Malaysia.- Police in Selangor have arrested 34 people in connection with an alleged online gambling syndicate at a terrace house in Sungai Buloh. The raid on August 30 targeted a group that had allegedly been active for several months.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the syndicate recruited victims by posing as women on Facebook. “The victims are then persuaded to access a gambling website while the betting and withdrawal of money is carried out via WhatsApp using an overseas bank account,” he told reporters.
The suspects are 29 men and five women. Shazeli said the group earned between RM2,000 (US$470) and RM2,500 (US$590) per day. All 34 suspects, including one Malaysian national, were remanded for four days starting August 31, with police applying for an extension at the Shah Alam Magistrates’ Court. The case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(b), (c) and (g) of the Open Gambling House Act 1953.
