PAGCOR launches 24/7 National Problem Gambling Helpline

The helpline directly connects to trained counsellors for confidential support and counselling.

The Philippines.- The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has launched its 24/7 National Problem Gambling Helpline (NPGH). The phone service, reached on 02-8248-9568, directly connects to trained counsellors providing confidential support and counselling for those experiencing gaming-related issues. The initiative is supported by Seagulls Flock Organization Inc. (SFO).

In a keynote speech read by senior vice president for Land-Based Operations Daniel Cecilio during a launch event yesterday (May 26), PAGCOR chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco said the line will cater to family members as well as people struggling with problem gambling themselves.

“This National Problem Gambling Helpline that we are launching today reflects PAGCOR’s commitment to ensure that the gaming industry remains productive, well-governed, humane, and accountable,’’ Tengco said.

‘’PAGCOR is aware that for many, gaming is just a form of leisure and recreation,” he said. “But for some, what may start as entertainment can gradually lead to financial strain and ruin, emotional distress, damaged relationships, and isolation.”

He added: “Through the dedication of their psychologists, counsellors, social workers, researchers, and advocates, they have helped many individuals rebuild their lives. You bring to this partnership not only expertise, but genuine compassion and a firm belief that people can recover, heal, and start again.”

SFO chairperson Teresita “Chit” Castillo expressed gratitude for PAGCOR’s support and noted that the NPGH is the first round-the-clock dedicated to addressing gambling problems in the Philippines. Currently, 12 para-counsellors are working over three shifts per day. Castillo said she hopes more para-counsellors will join in the near future.
