India.- The Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority (TNOGA) has blocked three Telegram groups and their administrators for promoting illegal online betting. The groups, which had a combined membership of 13,518 users, were allegedly used to share betting links, promotional offers and instructions to access gambling websites.
Regulators and law enforcement agencies across several states have identified Telegram as a key channel for illegal betting promotion, particularly during major sporting events such as cricket tournaments, due to its large user base, private group features and limited traceability.
The move follows the introduction of Tamil Nadu’s Real Money Games Regulations in February 2025, imposing requirements for licensed platforms, including age verification, mandatory KYC procedures and a range of responsible gaming measures such as playtime alerts, spending limits and overnight access restrictions.
There is still regulatory uncertainty at the national level amid constitutional debates over the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act.
