The Secretary for Economy and Finance stepped down for personal reasons, with Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai temporarily assuming responsibilities while a successor is nominated.
Macau.- Secretary for Economy and Finance, Tai Kin Ip, has resigned unexpectedly from his role. Chief Executive Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai will temporarily assume his responsibilities until a successor is appointed by Chinese authorities.
According to a government announcement, Tai submitted his resignation request for personal reasons, and it was subsequently approved by the State Council following a recommendation from the Chief Executive.
Tai took up the role on December 20, 2024 having previously served as Director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT). He oversaw Macau’s gaming industry as part of his portfolio, including supervision of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ).
In a statement, Tai expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and the Macau administration for their trust and support and said he would continue to support the city’s development.

A government statement read: “Tai led the economy and finance team in governing according to the law with dedication and a strong sense of responsibility, determination, and efficiency, and promoted new progress in the economic and financial fields”.
