The Jeju Island government has conducted a survey of 1,000 Jeju residents on their perception of foreign-only casinos.
South Korea.- The local government of Jeju Island has conducted a survey about the role of the island’s foreigner-only casino industry in driving economic and social benefits.
Among the 1,000 respondents, 25.7 per cent viewed the overall effect of the casinos as positive while 28.6 per cent considered it negative – the remaining 45.7 per cent had no opinion to express.
As to whether the casino industry contributed to inbound tourists staying longer in Jeju, a total of 49.9 per cent agreed, 21.6 per cent disagreed and 28.5 per cent remained neutral.
49 per cent of respondents also concluded casinos help to attract foreign tourists. The figure was up 4.8 per cent from 2023 when 44.3 per cent held the same view. 21.8 per cent disagreed that casinos had increased the number of international visitors, an increase from 18.7 per cent in the 2023 poll who held that perspective. 29.2 per cent expressed neutrality on the subject, down from 37 per cent who were neutral in the 2023 survey.
When asked about the types of projects casinos should undertake to benefit the local community, respondents indicated the following priorities: 34.7 per cent believed that casinos should focus on creating job opportunities for youth. Meanwhile, 29.7 per cent supported initiatives aimed at boosting the tourism industry, 14.9 per cent advocated for village development, 12.2 per cent highlighted the importance of supporting vulnerable groups and 8.5 per cent emphasised the need for programs that nurture student talent.
71.4 per cent were found to be aware that there are foreigner-only casinos in the province, but only 40.4 per cent were aware that Jeju Island directly manages and supervises these casinos.
The island currently has eight casino venues.

Lotte Tour announces Jeju Dream Tower casino revenue in 2024
Lotte Tour Development, the operator of Jeju Dream Tower casino, reported that casino revenues in 2024 rose 93.3 per cent year-on-year to KRW294.65bn (US$200.7m).
Casino drop, the amount paid by customers to buy chips for table games, was nearly KRW1.52tn, up 19.2 per cent year-on-year. Hotel revenue stood at KRW84.52bn (US$57.4m), down 7.8 per cent year-on-year.
December casino revenue declined 9.5 per cent month-on-month from KRW26.08bn (US$18.6m) to KRW23.6bn (US$16m). The figure was up 64.6 per cent year-on-year. Table-game sales amounted to KRW22.15bn (US$15.1m), down 10.9 per cent sequentially but up 66.3 per cent year-on-year. Machine-game sales rose 18.5 per cent month-on-month and 41.9 per cent year-on-year to KRW1.45bn (US$984,000).
The casino drop was KRW132.78bn (US$90.1m), down 1.8 per cent sequentially, but up 5.2 per cent year-on-year. Some 36,490 people visited the casino, down 1.9 per cent from the previous month but up 28.8 per cent year-on-year. The hold rate for the casino’s table games was 16.7 per cent, versus 18.4 per cent in November and 10.6 per cent compared to December 2023.
