Cases before the High Court seek to determine whether operators acted unlawfully.
New Zealand.- An unnamed plaintiff has reportedly filed a series of coordinated legal actions related to offshore online gambling in New Zealand. SkyCity Entertainment Group, Bet365 and Super Group are reportedly named as defendants.
The lawsuits are being pursued under several pieces of legislation, including the Gambling Act, Financial Markets Conduct Act, Contract and Commercial Law Act, and Fair Trading Act, seeking to determine whether offshore operators that historically accepted New Zealand-based customers acted unlawfully. In addition to corporate entities, senior executives have also been named as defendants in some proceedings.
One case reportedly includes an application to proceed as a funded class action, potentially covering gambling losses incurred by local players over several years. According to Justice Ian Gault, the cases raise overlapping issues but have not yet been consolidated. The court has granted interim name suppression to protect the identities of the claimants.
The legal action follows regulatory changes enacted in June 2025, which explicitly prohibit offshore gambling companies from offering services to players within New Zealand. The country is preparing to launch regulated online casino gambling, with licence issuance to begin in December.
