Japan.- Universal Entertainment Corp has reiterated a cautious stance towards Japan’s next round of integrated resort (IR) licensing. In a summary of its latest annual general meeting, the Tokyo-based group said it recognises the opportunity presented but has not made any decisions regarding participation or the structure of a potential investment.
Only one of the three available licences was awarded in the first round of casino applications in Japan going to the MGM Osaka project led by MGM Resorts International and Orix Corporation. The application window for the second round of bids will run from May to November 2027.
Universal said it remains focused on improving service quality and customer satisfaction at Okada Manila in the Philippines, to support earnings recovery. The group is also pursuing a diversification strategy aimed at reducing reliance on any single market. Central to this plan is the development of a new gaming machine business as a “third pillar” alongside its existing operations.
