Choi Byung-hwan has pledged safer industry growth and stronger safeguards against gambling-related harm.
South Korea.- Choi Byung-hwan has been appointed as the new chairman of South Korea’s National Gambling Control Commission. The appointment marks the launch of the regulator’s seventh term.
Choi was installed at the Government Complex in Gwacheon following the nomination of 11 civilian members to the commission by South Korea’s prime minister on April 21. They will serve three-year terms until April 2029.
In his inaugural address, Choi pledged to strengthen safeguards and address the risks associated with gambling. “We will actively work to establish a user protection system that safeguards the public from the side effects of the gambling industry and ensures its sound growth,” he said.
The commission is tasked with overseeing the development of the sector while preventing and treating gambling addiction and combating illegal gambling. It comprises experts from fields such as law, psychiatry, IT and public policy.
