Macau VIP baccarat revenue rises 35.4% in Q1

Summary:
Despite a rebound in VIP play, Macau’s gaming sector is still below peak levels. In the first quarter of 2026, VIP baccarat gross gaming revenue reached MOP19.56bn, a 35.4% increase year-on-year but a 3.6% decline from the previous quarter. The high-roller segment accounted for 29.7% of total revenue, while mass-market baccarat remained dominant with MOP36.56bn in revenue. Slot machine revenue rose 21.6% annually, and live multi-game electronic tables saw a 3.5% increase. Total gaming revenue reached MOP66bn, showing double-digit growth. Football wagering declined by 10%, while basketball betting grew by 23.7%. Despite positive trends, the sector is still striving to reach previous peak levels.

Philippine gross gaming revenue up 6.39% in 2025

PAGCOR’s report on the Philippine gaming industry in 2025 revealed a Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) of US$6.61bn, a 6.39% increase from the previous year. Revenue from online and electronic gaming sectors surpassed earnings from brick-and-mortar casinos, with electronic gaming contributing 50.77% of total industry GGR. Licensed casinos experienced a decline in revenue, while PAGCOR-operated casinos also saw a decrease. CEO Alejandro Tengco highlighted the growth of electronic gaming revenue, despite challenges like the de-linking of e-wallets. He emphasized the importance of regulatory balance for sustainable and compliant industry growth. The report reflects the evolving landscape of the Philippine gaming industry, with online gaming emerging as a significant revenue driver.

Jefferies warns Macau casino margins will remain challenging amid geopolitical uncertainty

Jefferies analysts predict that Macau casino operators will face challenges with profitability in the first quarter of 2026 due to geopolitical uncertainty and competition. Despite a 14.3% increase in casino revenue in the first quarter, margins are expected to be under pressure. The firm maintains a forecast of 6.8% growth for the year but expects profitability to lag due to reinvestment and competition for premium customers. SJM Holdings is seen as an outlier with potential EBITDA growth, while Galaxy Entertainment is a top pick for its expansion plans. Other operators like Sands China, Wynn Macau, and MGM China are focusing on higher-value customers and EBITDA growth rather than market share. Overall, margins are expected to remain constrained even as visitation and gaming volumes increase.

Hong Kong pauses basketball betting plans amid concerns over prediction markets

Authorities in Hong Kong have suspended the rollout of legal basketball betting due to concerns over the growth of prediction markets and their potential impact on illegal gambling. The government had planned to launch regulated betting for the 2026-27 basketball season but is now evaluating regulatory implications. The amendments to Hong Kong’s betting legislation aimed to curb illegal betting and generate public revenue, with the Hong Kong Jockey Club as the only licensed operator. Prediction markets, allowing users to trade on future event outcomes, pose enforcement challenges. The government will conduct a more in-depth study on these models before proceeding. The HKJC respects the decision and estimates significant revenue once the market matures. A survey showed strong public support for legalizing basketball betting, but unauthorized platforms remain illegal in Hong Kong.

Macau gaming tax hits US$3.2bn in Q1 2026

In the first quarter of 2026, gaming taxes in Macau reached MOP25.8bn, accounting for 89% of total government revenue. This marked a 15% increase from the previous year, with March alone contributing MOP8.87bn. Despite efforts to diversify, the government remains heavily reliant on gaming revenue. Total government revenue for the quarter was MOP28.73bn, resulting in a fiscal surplus of MOP13.64bn, up 44% from last year. The strong tax collection in the first quarter puts the government on track to meet its full-year revenue targets, with nearly 28% of the annual gaming tax estimate already achieved by March.
