The organisation has reaffirmed its commitment to community participation.
Hong Kong.- The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) says it has contributed nearly HK$6.7bn (US$857m) to sports development over the past decade through its Charities Trust. It says the funds have supported initiatives at both elite and grassroots levels while reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as an international sports hub.
The announcement was made during The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Day at Sha Tin Racecourse, which gathered more than 200 charity and community representatives. The ceremony featured senior government officials and Club leadership.
Club chairman Martin Liao said: “Horse racing is a symbol of Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability under One Country, Two Systems, and remains a highly popular sport that embodies the city’s ‘can-do’ spirit,” Liao said. “Through our unique integrated business model, we deliver world-class racing and responsible wagering, support the Government in combating illegal gambling, and generate economic and social value through taxes, charity donations and employment opportunities.”
In the last financial year, the Club contributed HK$39.1bn (US$5bn) to society, including HK$9bn (US$1.15bn) in approved charity donations. The organisation remains Hong Kong’s largest single taxpayer.
Rosanna Law, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the HKSAR Government, said: “The Club has long been one of the Government’s most valued partners in promoting sports, from supporting the construction of the Hong Kong Sports Institute in the late 1970s to backing major multi-sport events and international competitions,” Law said, referencing the upcoming National Games and several “M” Mark events, including the Hong Kong Sevens.
Looking ahead, the Hong Kong Jockey Club continues with initiatives designed to increase participation, particularly among underprivileged groups, such as Racing with Rugby.
